AHA vs. BHA

AHA’s and BHA’s are two very common ingredients in skincare, and this is for good reason! Everyone is chasing that glow and these products are heavy hitters when it comes to delivering it. So, what are they and what are the differences?

First thing is first, what does AHA and BHA stand for?

AHA- Alpha Hydroxy Acid

BHA- Beta Hydroxy Acid

What do they do?

Both AHAs and BHAs are chemical exfoliants. They work to remove dead skin cells, even skin tone, improve skin texture, unclog pores to prevent acne, and decrease inflammation.

How are they different?

AHAs are water-soluble acids that work to turn over cells which makes it ideal for evening skin tone, minimizing visible pores, fine lines and mild hyperpigmentation. Common AHAs that you see in many skincare products are; glycolic, lactic, malic, mandelic, and tartaric acids.

BHAs are fat-soluble acids that work deep into your pores to dry out excess oils and move dead skin cells out to unclog your pores.  The most common type we see in skincare products is salicylic acid.

Can you combine these acids?

In short, yes! If combined the proper way they are most effective when used together. They can however, be used very effectively separately as well. They can be used at different times of the day, or days of the week, or sections of the face. The best way to determine how they can do the most for you is to speak with a skin therapist to create a truly custom routine and create the best outcome.

What is the bottomline?

While they are both great exfoliants, AHAs are a great overall product to add to your routine to promote cell turnover, build your glow and provide anti-aging properties. BHAs work on a deeper level to unclog pores and treat inflammation and acne.
