Combination skin

If you’ve read all my posts on the different skin types so far, you’re a real one but if you’re unsure what type of skin you have refer back to my What’s your skin type post. As we’ve learned, an important factor in what type of skin each of us have comes down to our sebaceous glands. These are the glands which produce and control the natural oils found in our skin. For individuals with dry skin, their sebaceous glands simply do not produce enough oil, whereas those with oily skin produce an excess of oil. Those with combination skin have different areas which produce different amounts of oil.

Who has combination skin?

Combination skin simply means that your skin can be dry or normal in some areas and oily in other areas. This is completely normal and many people have this type of skin, however it does require different care in different areas. Keep reading to hear my tips and recommendations if you have combination skin.

Tips for combination skin

-Use a gentle cleanser

-Correct oily areas with blotting pads

-Invest in 2 moisturizers

-Exfoliate

Here is a guideline on where to start for morning and evening skincare routines with a combination skin type:

AM

1. Cleanser

We want to make sure we are removing any build up that might have happened throughout the night

2. Toner

This step clears any oil that your cleanser may have forgotten and also helps to balance out your skin’s pH

3. Serum

Serum’s are great for hydrating your skin, especially ones which contain hyaluronic acid

4. Moisturizer

If possible it’s best to utilize 2 different moisturizers, a heavier one for the areas of your skin which are more dry and a lighter, oil-free moisturizer more suitable for the oily areas of your skin

5. SPF

Don’t forget a lightweight sunscreen! We wanted to be protected from the sun without adding too much oil!

PM

1. Make up remover

If you wear makeup this will be a very important step in your evening skincare routine to help keep your pores clear, a great option for this is micellar water

2. Cleanser

Following with a night time cleanser will help to ensure all the build up and dirt from the day has been washed away

3. Exfoliant

Exfoliate once per week to help remove dead skin cells and unclog your pores, but really try to keep this once a week so you don’t strip your skin of all it’s natural oils, especially in your more dry areas

4. Face mask

Also once per week try “multimasking” where you apply different face masks to different areas of the face based on their needs

5. Moisturizer

Use the heaviest product last which is usually your moisturizer, make sure to apply extra to the particularly dry areas of your skin
