Skincare Enemies

Layering skincare is a great way to achieve your goals and get that ultimate glow! A good skincare routine usually involves a few steps and the utilization of ingredients that compliment each other. In building your skincare routine there are a few products that don’t play nicely together and can take you further from your goals. Check them out below to make sure that all your time and money invested in skincare have the best return for you!

Retinol:

AHA/BHA’s - exfoliation that can lead to excessively dry skin or irritation when used with retinol

Vitamin C - Vitamin C is recommended during the day and is a powerhouse antioxidant (and if possible a staple- huge emphasis on staple; one should be a part of your skincare routine!), it protects you from environmental aggressors and retinol is used to rebuild collagen and is best done overnight while resting. They are used best apart as the specific issues they address do not over lap and are used at different times of the day.

Benzoyl Peroxide - They can neutralize each other making both ineffective.

Vitamin C:

Retinol - as seen above!

Niacinamide - They are both powerful antioxidants and they are not both needed- save that money!

AHA/BHA’s - this will break the Vitamin C down and render it less effective or not effective at all

Too many Acids:

Can compromise skin barrier if done on your own (But using premixed formulas from reputable brands is ok!)

SPF:

Make-up/Moisturizer - SPF is an absolute MUST, especially when using any of the strong ingredients mentioned above. However we recommend it is put on overtop of moisturizer and underneath makeup and not mixed in with either which then decreases its strength.
