The Good, the Bad, and the Oily
As we discussed last week, if you have oily skin your face is most likely left looking shiny and greasy by the end and who wants that? This type of skin can be one of the most challenging to keep under control especially as we head into the summer months, as humidity levels rise this only encourages our sebaceous glands to produce more oil. If you’re unsure which skin type you have, you can refer back to the What’s your skin type post from last week!
Who gets oily skin?
Everybody’s skin produces oil, some of us just produce more than others! Oily skin is the result of an excess amount of sebum being produced from our sebaceous glands located just under the skin's surface. Now don’t get me wrong sebum isn’t all bad, after all it helps moisturize and protect your skin, but in excess it can lead to breakouts and acne prone skin!
Not to worry, there are many ways to eliminate excess oil and keep your skin under control.
Tips for oily skin
-I know it’s hard but do your best not to touch that beautiful face throughout the day - although it’s tempting, touching your face will only lead to spreading dirt and oil to your face!
-Use blotting papers throughout the day! If you have oily skin and haven’t used a blotting paper before, these will become your best friend, trust me
-Choose skincare products that are labeled oil free, this will help to eliminate clogged pores and prevent acne
-Always always always take your makeup off at night!
It is also so important to stay consistent in your skincare routine to manage all that oil! Here are my suggestions for morning/night routines with oily skin
AM
1. Mild gel or foaming cleanser
In the morning I recommend using a light and gentle cleanser, either foaming or gel based to prep your skin for the day, using a heavy cleanser can agitate the skin and cause it to produce more oil
2. Gentle toner
It’s important to keep your morning routine simple with oily skin as this sets the tone for your skin throughout the rest of the day - using a gentle or even natural toner in the morning can help to balance your skin and even help control oil throughout the day
3. Hydrating Moisturizer
You should always use a moisturizer in the morning to hydrate your skin, however it is important you pick the right moisturizer! Aim for a moisturizer which is light and rich in hyaluronic acid to add hydration without feeling too heavy
4. Sunscreen
Sunscreen is one of the most important steps in your skincare routine in my opinion and although those with oily skin may tend to skip this step because they feel like it adds excess oil, there are plenty of options which are anti-shine and oil-controlling
PM
1. Cleansing Balm
I love double cleansing at night, making sure I've removed all the dirt and build up from the day gives me such peace of mind. Most cleansing balms are oil based but that’s okay, it’s a good place to start and prep your skin for your second cleanser.
2. Purifying Cleanser
Next, you will want to go in with a stronger cleanser but not too strong that it strips your face or leaves you feeling too dry. This will help to further remove all the dirt and grime from the day.
3. Light Chemical Exfoliant
Chemical exfoliants are so nice as they help to balance your skin’s texture while removing dead skin cells which no one wants!
4. Clay or Purifying mask
This step is not for everyday use but incorporating a purifying mask in your routine even once a week can help to clear your skin.
5. Strong Toner
At this point in your skincare routine you can opt for a stronger toner, one that has salicylic acid would be ideal as this will help to clear out excess oils.
6. Strong Moisturizer
Last but not least, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Layer on that moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated throughout the night so you wake up with glowing skin and ready to take the day on
